Forrest Gump’s Workout

Gilchrist – January 7, 2021

PAX: Mr. Emcee, Iron Horse, Carbon Copy, Mensa, Hawaii 50, Dimples, Wallflower, Pebbles, Tastycakes, Psycho

Q: Crab Legs

Warm-up: 10 Burpees and a 30 second squat hold.

Work: We started out taking a left out of Gilchrist to do the big loop. Instead of doing reps, we merely noticed our usual stops and pointed out that we would usually stop at certain locations. Ran from Gilchrist to Timberlane School Road to Live Oak Plantation to Thomasville. Headed north on Thomasville to the corner of Timberlane. Pax were allowed to pick either option 1 or option 2 without knowing what the options were. Option 2 was chosen so we turned back around and ran the way we came. On the way back, we stopped several times for sets of 7 reps (it is the 7th day of the year.) Made it back to Timberlane Church of Christ and did a hill sprint. Did some Bear Crawls up the Timberlane hill back to Gilchrist. Passed Gilchrist and then looped back through the bus ramp (which is actually not the bus ramp, come to find out.) Back to the flag.

I did this workout b/c I need to get better at running but also because I noticed that my brain/thoughts can really hold me back. I usually find myself running the big loop waiting to get to the next stop. I also noticed that if someone says we are doing 10 reps, I am tired by the 10th rep. If they go over the reps they called, I feel like I can’t do it. If someone calls 20 reps, I can do 20 reps, etc. It is almost like I set a limit in my mind and my body follows. So today’s workout was geared toward breaking past those self-imposed limits and seeing what we could do in spite of our minds or our previous habits. We ended up doing about 4.05 miles with several ~1-2 minutes stops for work and still made it back to the flag with 30 seconds to spare.

When we change our behaviors, we open the door to changing the way we think.

Ephesians 4:22 – You were taught with reference to your former way of life to lay aside the old man who is being corrupted in accordance with deceitful desires, 23 to be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and to put on the new man who has been created in God’s image—in righteousness and holiness that comes from truth.
