I obviously was so excited about leading the Q that I planned way more than could be accomplished…so consider this Part 1. Part 2 will come in the near future.

“A Heavy Load”
Two traveling monks reached a town where there was a young woman waiting to step out of her sedan chair. The rains had made deep puddles and she couldn’t step across without spoiling her silken robes. She stood there looking very cross and impatient. She was scolding her attendants. They had nowhere to place the packages they held for her, so they couldn’t help her across the puddle.
The younger monk noticed the woman, said nothing, and walked by. The older monk quickly picked her up and put her on his back, transported her across the water, and put her down on the other side. She didn’t thank the older monk, she just shoved him out of the way and departed.
As they continued on their way, the young monk was brooding and preoccupied. After several hours, unable to hold his silence, he spoke out. “That woman back there was very selfish and rude, but you picked her up on your back and carried her! The she didn’t even thank you!”
“I set the woman down hours ago,” the older monk replied. “Why are you still carrying her?”

I shared a story about an interaction with another person led me to brood and relive the experience despite my plan to be positive in my thoughts as a goal for 2019. I remember waking up from sleep in the middle of the night and continuing to think about the interaction. This passage from Zen Shorts is what I remembered as I fought that tendency to brood. I would read this book to my daughters when they were toddlers, but it’s obvious the book had more impact on me. In the end, I let one person on this planet ruin my day. Happiness is a choice. Contentment is a choice. Being offended is a choice. Everyday it’s your choice with what you fill your heart.
Welcome to Chainsaw’s 2.0, FNG Caleb. He is certainly one of the few 16 y/o young men waking up before his peers to workout with men much older than he. The stories of how Jugs, Shooter, and Ron Swanson came to join F3 were shared during this time. Whether it was an emotional headlock that gets applied or that random exposure through a media outlet that brought us into the Gloom that first time, it is how this group shapes us to be better husbands, fathers, friends, and supporters to others that will continue to draw us back for more. Be the reason someone has a great day.
