The Thang: We immediately grabbed our weights and headed to the Gazebo for Warm up as @Count got mad because we technically ran with our weights but I think he moved past it. If he didn’t he should because I forgave him for popping my balloon during @Dirty Mike games — anyway we did about 32 SSH while we waited for @Rico to catch up.
We warmed up with this thing called the “Slaughter Starter “— 10 Burpees, 9 Merkins, 8 Burpees, and so on until you get to one. Except we did 10 instead of 1rep.
After we were sufficiently warmed up we headed to Field 8.
The best workouts are simple — you don’t need to invent new exercises or do 1000 burpees to get good work in. This one was simple.
Evolution 1
Station 1: 20 Overhead Presses
→ Overhead Carry to Station 2
Station 2: 15 Squats (weighted)
→ Leave the weight and Run to Station 3
Station 3: 10 Burpees
→ Run back to Station 2 and pick up the weight
→ Overhead Carry back to Station 1
(Repeat x 3)
After 3 rounds we did an Overhead Carry the full length of the field — down and back.
Evolution 2
Station 1: 20 Merkins
→ Overhead Carry to Station 2
Station 2: 15 Lunges (weighted)
→ Leave the weight and Run to the end and back to Station 2
Station 3: 10 Thrusters
→ Overhead Carry to Station 1
(Repeat x 3)
Return to the flag.
We finished up with the Slaughter Starter Finisher.
With 2 minutes to spare we did LBCs and Flutters around the circle.
Moleskin:
Welcome to the new year gents.
As is customary many of us have been talking about the resolutions we’ve made.
There’s always new energy around our efforts toward health or fitness or some other intellectual endeavor. I won’t say any of this is inherently bad because I’m doing a “dry January” myself but according to some half ass googling I did — 23% of people fail their commitments in the first week and 43% before the end of January.
I could be wrong here but I imagine this type of ungrounded fruitless ambition is what the author of Ecclesiastes means by “toil”.
Recently I picked up a book called Living Life Backwards by David Gibson. it’s a study on the book of Ecclesiastes that is kind of a Christian take on the philosophy of memento mori (or the inevitability of death) not to get too dark here but the book goes on to highlight chapter 4 verse 6:
One hand full of rest is better than two fists full of labor and striving after wind.
I’m no expert on toil or the Bible or rest for that matter. But I hope with this kind of perspective we can all make each moment count not just toward accomplishing some grand task but rather to exist, as the author Watchman Nee says, “as an expression of thankfulness and gratitude for God’s grace and provision for who we are and what we have right now”.
This does not mean we don’t set goals or aspire or even put forth effort. Absolutely do those things but with tact and heart. Each moment, each task, and each failure are steps toward the only thing that is for certain in this life. And that is an ending.
So be mindful and be intentional. And support your brothers.
Angus
